Big Cypriot Weddings

Last week I attended my 2nd Cypriot wedding. I like weddings; the soppy romantic in me enjoys the "love is in the air" feeling and the foodie in me enjoys the grub! So a big BIG Cypriot wedding at Nicosia Country Club was the just the thing for a Saturday night.

It may have been a small wedding by Cypriot standards, but I think around 500 people is a rather large gathering, and that doesn't include the guests at the ceremony and the money giving part! One of the traditions at a Cypriot wedding is to give the newly married couple money, to help them start their new life together. So instead perusing the John Lewis wedding gift list, each guest gives a small envelope with a monetary offering or Fakelos which means envelope. With hundreds of guests invited, including friends, family, friends of friends, friends of the family, granny's friends, work friends etc, Cypriot weddings can be a big business!

So consumed with the event, and more so the food, we only took a handful of photographs. The night ending with some traditional Cypriot dancing courtesy of Harrys cousin and Harry attempting to get granny on her feet dancing.

My Greek name card - it seems I'm a Kakoullis already.

Its tradition to throw flower petals whilst dancing
